Clean clothes, warm showers, and basic hygiene are essential parts of everyday life. These simple needs allow people to feel confident at work, comfortable at school, and hopeful during difficult seasons. In Brunswick County and across Southeastern North Carolina, many families and individuals do not have regular access to these essentials. Suds of Love exists to meet these needs through a ministry rooted in compassion, dignity, and community care.

Suds of Love has served Brunswick County for years through its beloved mobile laundry and shower truck, known as Miss Dorothy. Miss Dorothy has traveled to neighborhoods in Shallotte, Calabash, Leland, Southport, Supply, Ocean Isle Beach, Oak Island, Bolivia, and nearby areas with a mission to meet people where they are. She has provided thousands of loads of clean laundry, countless warm showers, and a safe place for people facing homelessness or crisis to feel seen, cared for, and valued.

As the need continues to grow across Brunswick County and Southeastern North Carolina, Suds of Love is expanding. The organization is working to complete Suds 2.0, a fully equipped enclosed trailer designed to double the capacity of their current outreach. This new trailer will bring six washer and dryer sets, improved plumbing, safer stairs and locks, better storage for hygiene kits, and a more efficient layout for volunteers. The design allows Suds of Love to serve more families, support more schools, and travel to more communities that struggle with hygiene insecurity.

The demand for mobile laundry and shower services has increased throughout the region. Rising housing costs in areas like Bolivia, Leland, Oak Island, and Southport have pushed many families into temporary or unstable living situations. Students in multiple Brunswick County schools arrive without access to clean clothes, which affects attendance, confidence, and academic performance. Families in rural Southeastern North Carolina face transportation challenges that limit access to laundromats. Individuals experiencing homelessness in Shallotte, Calabash, and surrounding areas often rely entirely on outreach programs for hygiene support.

Miss Dorothy has carried a heavy load in these communities. The original truck continues to run faithfully, yet capacity limitations mean long wait times on Serve Days. Families may wait hours for laundry cycles to finish, and showers must be rotated carefully to ensure safety and privacy.

The addition of Suds 2.0 will dramatically increase what Suds of Love can provide throughout Brunswick County. More washers and dryers means more clean clothes during school days, job searches, and medical appointments. Additional showers mean more comfort and dignity for individuals facing difficult seasons.

The Suds 2.0 trailer will not replace Dorothy. It will work alongside her. Two mobile units will allow Suds of Love to serve more locations throughout Southeastern North Carolina. This means more outreach days, more communities reached, and more direct support for families struggling with hygiene needs. The expanded model strengthens the organization’s ability to travel to unserved or rural parts of Brunswick County such as Supply, Waccamaw, Northwest, and Ash.

Building Suds 2.0 requires careful planning, community support, and strong partnerships. The project includes six new washer and dryer units, propane systems, plumbing, electrical work, new stairs and locks, secure interior storage, cleaning equipment, and a reliable truck to tow the trailer. These components allow Suds of Love to provide safe, effective, and consistent outreach services. The organization is also working with local professionals across Brunswick County to ensure every part of the build meets safety standards and long term durability needs.

Educational outreach is a vital part of the Suds 2.0 mission. Families served through Suds of Love often face barriers related to transportation, employment, mental health, disability, or food insecurity. By bringing laundry and shower services directly to neighborhoods across Brunswick County, the organization removes those barriers and supports broader community health. Research shows that access to clean clothes decreases absenteeism in schools, improves confidence for job seekers, reduces stress for families, and strengthens public health outcomes in vulnerable populations. These benefits extend across Southeastern North Carolina as Suds of Love continues to grow.

Suds of Love partners with churches, schools, civic groups, and community organizations across Brunswick County to support Serve Days. These partnerships help connect Suds of Love to individuals who may not know where to turn for help. Volunteers play an important role on Serve Days by helping pack hygiene kits, load laundry, clean the shower areas, organize supplies, and offer encouragement to guests. The new trailer will provide better space and workflow for volunteers, allowing Suds of Love to expand the number of community members they can reach at each event.

As the year draws to a close, Suds of Love is continuing its fall fundraiser through December 31. The organization is inviting the Brunswick County community to help complete the Suds 2.0 trailer. Gifts made before the end of the year bring the mission closer to launching this expanded service model in 2025. Contributions of any size support the installation of the washers and dryers, the plumbing and propane systems, the trailer finishing work, and the truck needed for safe transport. Every donation helps Suds of Love serve more families across Southeastern North Carolina.

Hope moves through this ministry each time a family receives clean clothes for school, a parent finds comfort after a long week, or a neighbor steps into a warm shower for the first time in days. The Suds 2.0 trailer represents more than equipment. It represents dignity, confidence, and the belief that every person deserves to feel valued. The project strengthens the mission of Suds of Love and brings renewed care to families across Brunswick County.
